More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe main causes of poverty are imbalances in land holdings and indebtedness; natural resource degradation, natural disasters; and the lack of education, health facilities resulting from weak implementation of public programs. The persistence of unequal resource distribution forces the most vulnerable groups–women and children–to remain outside mainstream development. The project will address the needs of 300 women and provide them opportunity to access and gain control over resources. ActivitiesTraining will be provided on sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness, also on matters of governance, and skills to run an effective cooperative. Information sharing will be encouraged and there will also be workshops on gender issues. Latest Update from the FieldDecember 2008 UpdateBy Katherine Zavala - Coordinator of Programs, December 09, 2008 03:24 PM WACN conducted three days of training on sustainable agriculture and environmental awareness in two Nepali communities, training over 60 participants in Farm Yard Manure (FYM) fertilizers, compost preparation and management, vegetable production, and the importance of protecting the environment. Participants learned how to build sheds to preserve FYM and compost, to make organic bio-pesticides, and to cultivate and plant vegetable seedlings. WACN members with prior training as lead farmers utilized their skills and leadership capacity to act as resource people to all participants.
