More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

A Haitian proverb spotlights the connections between disease and hunger, medicine and food: "Giving drugs without food is like washing your hands and drying them in the dirt." Almost one quarter of the children in Haiti face chronic hunger. We work to prevent childhood malnutrition through nine clinics in Central Haiti and the Artibonite District with a combination of malnutrition treatment and prevention programs for children.

Activities

Treat severely malnourished children with Nourimanba (peanut-butter based Ready to Use Theraputic Food); provide moderately malnourished children with Nourimil (ereal-legume blend); support local production; provide a daily warm lunch to schoolkids

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

ZL can currently meet the needs of approxiamtely 12,800 children. This project will enable Zl to enroll more children in these programs, preventing childhood malnutrition and supporting the farmers and workers who produce the Nourimanba and Nourimil

Project Message

"This program not only treats malnutrition, but benefits the farmers and employees in Cange who are part of this program - local production creates jobs that would otherwise not be there."
- Erica Phillips, Leland Hunger Fellow, staff at Zanmi Lasante
