More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Szogliget is located in one of the poorest counties. After 1990, state sponsored factories and mines closed their gates leaving many people without jobs. The population fell below 800 as young people moved to the cities to find jobs. The village has a famous but neglected medieval castle and is located next to the UNESCO listed Aggtelek NP. The project aims to create a tourist destination by restoring part of the castle and bring 30000 visitors per year who will strengthen the local economy.

Activities

The project will clean up the castle grounds, restore a tower to be a viewpoint, place signs, boards and trash bins along the road that leads to the castle, and professionals will hold workshops for students about historic monument preservation.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will allow 100 people in the village of Szogliget to provide services to visitors and provide a better life for their families as well as stop the population decline in the village

Project Message

I have a disability that makes it hard for me to find a sustainable job. We have seen a steady increase in visitors and I now have the opportunity to make a living by coordinating the village rentals
- Mrs Agoston Mihalik, Szogliget

Latest Update from the Field

September Workshop

By Timea Tomatas - President, October 22, 2008 05:50 PM

Thanks to material and financial donations, preservation work has began on the Lisztes bastion. In the end of September members of the association collected and cleaned a large amount of scattered stone. Under the guidance of professionals from the Miskolc Bureau of the Office for Historic Preservation preservation efforts took place the first time in 300 year. As a result the deteriation was stopped and 3 loopholes were restored. The association will finish the year with the traditional fall castle workshop in the end of October.
