More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThere are one billion homeless in our world today. We use football as a trigger to inspire and energise people who are homeless to change their own lives. By this approach the Homeless World Cup creates better opportunities for people who are currently homeless and excluded and reduces homelessness on a global level. 77% of players change their lives regaining self esteem and coming off drugs and alcohol, getting into homes, jobs, training, education and repairing relationships. ActivitiesAn international football tournament has triggered and supports over 50 national football projects working with homeless people around the world. This improves health, self esteem and provides education and support to change lives. Why this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactBy 2012 we aim to support and fund local grassroots football projects in over 75 nations that will involve between 100,000 and one million homeless people to change their lives. This Saturday, Kicking It, the documentary about the story of the Homeless World Cup, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah. Narrated by Colin Farrell, the film chronicles the lives of seven players taking a once in a lifetime opportunity to represent their country at the Cape Town 2006 Homeless World Cup. Najib from war torn Afghanistan; Alex from the slums of Kenya; Damien and Simon from the drug rehab clinics of Dublin, Ireland; Craig from the streets of Charlotte, North Carolina; Jesus from the overflowing public shelters of Madrid, Spain, and Slavan from the shadow culture of the illegal rural immigrants to the big city of St. Petersburg, Russia.
